Household Charge

The €100 household charge is payable by 31 March 2012. The payment can be made online, or alternatively homeowners can pay by cheque or postal order through the offices of their local City/County Council. It is also possible to pay the charge in four equal  instalments of €25 by direct debit at specified dates throughout the year. The charge is payable by the owners of the property, so it applies to landlords as well as owner-occupiers. No exemption is given to those who may also be paying the €200 NPPR charge in respect of the same propert

There are a number of exemptions from the charge which include:

- residential property which is part of the trading stock of a business and which is earning no income

- residential property vested in a housing authority, including property where households are purchasing their homes under the Shared Ownership Scheme and where the Local Authority stills retains an ownership stake

- residential property where a person has to leave their house due to long-term illness (e.g. a person moving to a nursing home)

Also payment of the charge will be waived in the following circumstances:

- the owner of the property is in receipt of mortgage interest supplement

- the house is located in one of a number of prescribed unfinished housing estates.
